“I went to this clinic because I was experiencing tinnitus and wanted to understand what could be done about it. Unfortunately, the audiologist barely addressed the tinnitus and told me outright that nothing could be done for it. Instead, the entire appointment focused on a hearing loss thant I was told was "minor", yet I was then strongly advised to come back in 1.5 years - and then went on to say, with complete certainty, that I would need hearing aids within the next five years. What truly shocked me was when he said that not getting hearing aids would increase my risk of developing dementia by 80%. He emphasized that the research backing this was "very strong" and even mentioned that it had been features in the news. The whole conversation felt overly dramatic and fear-based, especially for someone still in their 40s. The appointment quickly turned into what felt like a sales pitch, as he showed me what the hearing aids would look like and reassured me that they were small and discreet and I could get some that matches my hair color. Feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, I decided to get a second opinion. I saw Brian Alexander in Moncton, who listened and explained that tinnitus can be related to mild hearing loss, but saw absolutely no indication that I would need hearing aids anytime soon or ever and no mention of dementia. Most importantly, he told me there was definitely things that can be done to help manage tinnitus, and we now have five appointments booked specifically to address it. He was reassuring, informative - exactly what I had hoped for in the first place. The first experience left me feeling pressured, anxious, and misinformed. I'm extremely glad I trusted my instincts and got a second opinion. ”
